This report serves as a comprehensive baseline study and analysis of the rice sub-sector within the Hohoe and Jasikan districts. It examines the entire value chain—from input supply and primary production to transformation, marketing, and final consumption. The research was carried out as part of the "World Without Hunger" initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The study employed a multi-faceted methodology, including: Document Reviews: Analysis of relevant literature and internet sources. Surveys: Structured questionnaires administered to members of local rice farmers' associations. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs): Separate sessions for men and women rice farmers, processors, and millers to capture gender-specific constraints. Participatory Workshops: Three workshops designed to identify innovation opportunities and train actors in value addition and business management. The resulting data provides a roadmap for upgrading the rice value chain by addressing technical, institutional, and infrastructural gaps to make local rice more competitive against imported brands.
The Program of Accompanying Research for Agricultural Innovation (PARI) aims to improve rice production, processing, and marketing to enhance the livelihoods of the poor. This study utilizes a value chain analysis approach to identify production and postharvest constraints and develop intervention strategies. Conducted in the Volta Region of Ghana, the research provides baseline information for the formation of Innovation Platforms (IPs). Key findings highlight major constraints such as lack of land preparation equipment, high costs, and poor post-production quality due to inefficient milling. Proposed interventions include developing efficient seed distribution, establishing public-private partnerships (PPPs) for milling, and promoting local rice through better packaging and consumer sensitization. The study also identifies research opportunities in disease control, innovative pest management, and the development of new rice products.
