This publication documents the achievements, challenges, and lessons learned from twelve years (2007–2018) of implementation of the Platform for African-European Partnership in Agricultural Research for Development (PAEPARD). It synthesizes experiences from multi-stakeholder partnerships (MSPs) and the Users-Led Process (ULP) model across sub-Saharan Africa. The report presents case studies covering diverse agricultural value chains, including soybean processing in Benin, bio-compost production in Burkina Faso, citrus disease control in Ghana, poultry feed innovation in Nigeria, groundnut aflatoxin management in Malawi and Zambia, mango waste valorization in West Africa, potato seed systems in Burundi, and African Indigenous Vegetables in Uganda. The document highlights governance mechanisms, innovation brokering, capacity development, Competitive Research Fund (CRF) implementation, and lessons for strengthening equitable Africa–Europe research partnerships in Agricultural Research for Development (ARD)
This book provides a comprehensive capitalization of PAEPARD Phase II, showcasing how demand-driven, user-led, and multi-stakeholder approaches strengthened Africa–Europe agricultural research partnerships. Through documented case studies, it demonstrates how inclusive collaboration among farmers, researchers, private sector actors, and policymakers generated innovation, improved agricultural productivity, enhanced food and nutrition security, and mobilized follow-on funding. The publication distills practical lessons to inform future agricultural research-for-development initiatives and partnership models in sub-Saharan Africa.
